Watch or Buy Ishtar (1987)

Two under-talented New York City songwriters desperate for fame take a gig in Morocco, only to find themselves caught in a cover up & a battle for a fabled map between the Emir of Ishtar, the CIA & a left-wing guerrilla group.

Screencaps of Some Favorite Moments

As chosen by our illustrious panel of devoted Chuck & Lyle lovers.

project 1

ACT 1: How It Started

SCENESRogers & Clarke, hard at their 'craft'.
Trivia
- Beatty & Hoffman were really playing the piano in these scenes.

With song titles such as 'Portable Picnic', 'That A Lawnmower Can Do All That', 'Love In My Will', 'I Look To Mecca', 'How Big Am I?' & 'Wardrobe Of Love', it's like listening to a train wreck.

project 2

ACT 2: Chez Cheezy

SCENESDoin' the deed.
Trivia
- Their embarrasing interactions were mostly improvised

Stars in their own minds, they prove to be a hit in Morocco, too. However, once the applause dies away, the duo split up for the evening, each of them driven down their own paths of curiousity & thrills.

project 3

Act 3: Followed & Watched

SCENESAttracting all the wrong eyes.
Trivia
- Ishtar was the number one box office attraction in many countries during it's first week in theatres.

There are people who simply stumble aimlessly through life, managing to keep moving forward... somehow. Yet, you'd think all that drifting would bury them, sooner or later.

project 4

Act 1: Put to the Test

SCENESHitting the wall & moving on.
Trivia
- Doubles were not used in the ledge shots;
- Hoffman's screen father, David Marguilies, is only six months older than his screen son - both Hoffman & Marguilies were born in 1937.

These scenes are the perfect precognitive warnings to watching the audition segments of any singing talent show on TV.

project 5

Act 2: Covert Convos

SCENESThe sandy snags thicken.
Trivia
- Though many reviewers claim the film's initial shoot went way over schedule, it ran only 7 days over it's original schedule of 16 weeks.

When there's a meeting of the minds, the final result depends both on the content of the meetings & the minds involved. Maybe more the latter than the former.

project 6

Act 3: Lines Get Drawn

SCENESThe heat is on.
Trivia
- Beatty & Hoffman both offered to defer their salaries to help offset the movie's budget issues. Columbia Pictures declined their offers.

Hidden agendas, complex relationships, stooges following orders, the seats of power... you can practically hear the buttons being pushed.

project 7

ACT 1: The Country Unexpected

SCENESSettling into foreign troubles.
Trivia
- Elaine May & Charles Grodin were both born on April 21st.

It's practically impossible to warn people with overwhelming naivety about exactly how naive they are - some simply learn the hard way.

project 8

Act 2: Camel, Coup & Confusion

SCENESPulled in all directions.
Trivia
- In 1986, Beatty considered riding a camel in that years Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to promote the movie.

Even fictional history has shown time & time again that nothing puts everything into question more than the precise triggering of turmoil.

project 9

Act 3: Secret To Success

SCENESOut on top... sort of.
Trivia
- Early in 1987, footage for a music video of 'Little Darlin' was shot in New York with Hoffman & Beatty... And a camel.

Does the big secret always get revealed? Do the good guys always win? Are Rogers & Clark really *that* bad???
